OpenEMIS Malaysia UNHCR
OpenEMIS has been deployed in UNHCR Malaysia since 2012, in an effort to support the tracking of education opportunities for refugee children.
In Malaysia, the refugee and asylum-seeker population has been gradually growing over the past years. There are over 33,000 refugee children below the age of 18 who are registered with UNHCR, with more than 60 percent of them being in their school-going age. However, over 70 percent of those school-aged children are not enrolled in any kind of educational sites (UNHCR, 2015). Deprived of most fundamental rights, the young people are denied access to the formal education system.
To protect refugee children and assist in their educational needs, the UNHCR Malaysia team leveraged OpenEMIS as a tool to track of refugee children. OpenEMIS has been supporting the UNHCR Malaysia to track education opportunities for refugee children and help them get back in the classroom. Since project inception, Community Systems Foundation has provided technical support for implementation of the project. Information on educational activities for approximately 48,000 refugee children and 700 staff has been systematically gathered and analyzed in 142 education sites in 2015.
